About Acupuncture

British Acupuncture Council Summary

Acupuncture as practised by members of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) is an holistic approach to health based on over 2000 years of developments and refinements in the Far East. Western-style or medical acupuncture is a more recent development practised predominantly by doctors and physiotherapists which uses a more limited range of acupuncture techniques on the basis of a western medical diagnosis. Traditionally, acupuncture is an holistic approach to the management of disease as well as the maintenance of health. The skill of an acupuncturist lies in their ability to make a traditional diagnosis from what is often a complex pattern of disharmony. The exact pattern and degree of disharmony is unique to each individual and with traditional acupuncture will be treated as such with a personalised treatment plan.

How this works in practice

Viewing health and illness from a Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) perspective enables the practitioner to treat subtle imbalances. This can not only relieve symptoms but also improve the functioning of the immune system, regulate organ functions and create an enhanced sense of happiness and well-being, relieve stress and anxiety.

Although acupuncture cannot help everyone, it can effectively treat a very wide range of problems including gynaecological problems, headaches and migraine, irritable bowel syndrome, hay fever, insomnia, stress related conditions, depression, muscle and joint pain, low energy and more.

How does acupuncture work?

Chinese Medicine identifies different types of energy in the body which at certain points in our lives may become imbalanced.

The vital energy that flows through the body via a network of channels is called Qi (pronounced 'chee'). If the Qi becomes imbalanced then illness and pain will result. An acupuncturist determines the imbalance through a complex diagnoses and then by inserting needles in appropriate points on the channels promotes the body to rebalance itself.
